previous edition > MAT /1.1/ 4 September - 2 October 2020

Our first online module piloted shortly after the Beirut port blast with 6 movement artists from different backgrounds (dance, theater, clowning & therapy) and from different countries (Lebanon, USA, Greece & Iran) . Here’s what they had to say about their experience of the module:

A much needed training that art universities should consider offering.

Sabine Choucair / clown, director of Clown Me In

I learnt a lot and was encouraged to grow and to intensify my efforts in that regard. I felt a shift happened in me... the desire to professionalize. To make it as clear, crystal clear.

Caroline Hatem / theater director, actress, dancer, co-founder & president of Yazan

"I dove into the world that I hate (business), now I understand that it can be tailored to our values and our resources...it doesn't have to be something based on generating a lot of income."

Soline Daccache / director of Red Bridge Ensemble, dance movement therapist

This module exceeded expectations. Andre led personal and heart-felt sessions that asked us as participants to engage deeply with our own business ideas. We were asked to learn together, encouraged to ask questions, and consistently urged to apply the ideas to our own projects and businesses. The Yaraqa team consistently reminded us to be artists first, and offered examples that brought business concepts into the art field. All three, the trainer and moderators were extraordinarily generous and thoughtful, responsive, and rigorous - making sure to adapt to our needs. Very thankful this resource was made available.”

Nora Alami / dancer, choreographer, dramaturg

“As artists we put much time and effort on organizational parts of our "careers" that we are left with not as much resources as we need to do the actual work which is artistic creation. In this training, I learnt that we could bring more efficiency in the organizational aspect of our work by learning the principles of the business module.

I don't feel as distant and disconnected from the business side of our creative field. As much as we criticize the capitalist approach, we need to acknowledge that we are still part of the capitalist system and in order to break free from it, we need to take the first step of learning all about how it functions."

Sina Saberi / performance artist, director of Kahkeshan

“The strengths of this module were understanding and communication.

Tatiana Myrkou / choreographer & director
